Metalfer in DaNews: A Serbian steelmaker that has become a European industrial benchmark

In the latest edition of the prestigious industrial magazine DaNews, a comprehensive feature has been published on the development of Metalfer Group in Sremska Mitrovica, accompanied by an interview with the Group’s President, Mr. Branko Zečević. He reflects on what has been carefully built over recent years in Sremska Mitrovica – an integrated, professionally managed, and technologically grounded production system that today serves as a reference point not only for the region, but beyond.

The DaNews editorial team recognized that Serbia has developed an industrial ecosystem that meaningfully connects areas which, in many companies, remain technologically fragmented – a fully integrated production chain, extending from metal recycling and preparation, through melting, to rolling and the final product. Metalfer’s vertically integrated system, entirely based on Danieli technology and encompassing everything from scrap processing to finished steel, today represents the backbone of modern production in Sremska Mitrovica.

Particular emphasis is placed on the investment in a state-of-the-art scrap-recycling facility with a capacity of 260,000 tons per year, which provides Metalfer with what often distinguishes an ordinary producer from an industry leader: control of input quality, more stable melting operations, reduced energy consumption, and a visible reduction in CO₂ emissions. The results are highly tangible – from significantly more stable EAF performance to measurable financial savings per ton of steel produced, compared to purchasing scrap on the open market.

The second pillar of the story concerns the rolling mill. Endless Rolling technology in Sremska Mitrovica has enabled continuous operation, reduced downtime, improved quality, and provided the company with the flexibility to respond rapidly to market demands. Investments made in 2020 and 2022 – including the K-Spool and K-Welding systems combined with an induction furnace – further enhanced energy efficiency and ensured even greater production consistency.

In his DaNews interview, Branko Zečević clearly explains why this technological framework matters and why cooperation with Danieli was a strategic decision, not merely a technical solution. “The greatest advantage is integration. When a single partner covers both recycling and rolling, everything becomes interconnected, the process becomes more stable, and every improvement in one area immediately delivers a result in the next,” Zečević emphasizes, highlighting that system stability, rolling flexibility, and high, consistent product quality have become the everyday reality of the plant in Sremska Mitrovica.

The article published in DaNews stands as a clear and public acknowledgement within the industry that Metalfer has consistently made the right decisions: that its investments were strategic and well-planned, that its technological choices were deliberate and forward-looking, and that it is indeed possible to build in Serbia a facility that simultaneously meets market expectations, environmental and sustainability standards, and the demanding criteria of serious European industry.
